A customer asked me whether a taped insert with 3 pins or 2 pins is better. Actually, I personally think the 3-pin type is better, because it saves solder.
Recommended PCB Hole Sizes for Various Insert Terminals
– Two-pin holes: With 2 pins, used for general components. The most common and simple type, mainly for electrical conduction and fixation.
– Three-pin holes: With 3 pins, used for three-terminal devices. They support high current flow, provide good heat dissipation, and require wider and longer holes.
– Wide pin holes: Used for flat, wide pins that carry large current. The holes are oblong (slotted) shape, not classified by pin quantity. The extra pin usually serves as a heat sink, ground pin, or control pin, providing more stable mechanical fixation.
